Experience: To See Or To Feel
My recent painting, Evening In The Sky, got me thinking about what it is I’m trying to do with painting in general, with my art. I know it’s impossible to recreate nature on canvas, that experience reigns supreme over imitation. Manet said it too, that ours are feeble attempts. Painting is a humbling thing to do. It makes me realize exactly who is the master and who is the student.
These thoughts lead me to the conclusion that what I’m really trying to do with images on canvas is represent feelings about the subject–what the image evokes from within me.
In other words, my aim is to find out what my experience of nature is bringing to the surface of my psyche. It is this, the feelings welling up in me, that become the painting. It is these feelings that move the brush, apply the paint, form the composition.
